The
switchplates are decorated through a collage process using
multiple layers of paper images. Backgrounds and layered
pieces are cut out and trimmed by hand. The switchplates
are sealed with several coats of a polyurethane finish
which makes them glossy and also means they can be easily
cleaned by wiping. Each is handmade and one-of-a-kind.
The
steps of the process include: choosing backgrounds, deciding
where the holes should go, carefully cutting out the holes
by hand; choosing images to use for the collage process
and carefully cutting and trimming each piece by hand;
gluing a background to a switchplate cover; designing
each switchplate by deciding which images should be used
as layers in the collage and gluing each piece down; and
applying layers of poly finish and letting each thoroughly
dry (5-6 layers in all). I design according to balance,
color, themes, and generally whatever I find interesting
and attractive. I work with a variety of themes and categories.
I have gravitated to "oversized" or "jumbo"
switchplates because they provide me more space to decorate.
However, they all fit the same standard-sized lightswitches.
The process of making my switchplates is time-consuming,
but it is a hobby and I really enjoy it.
The
difference between regular and "oversized" switchplates
is merely the amount of space I have to decorate (my canvas
size). Approximate sizes of switchplates are as follows
(width x height):
